2023-11-03This week marked the 20th anniversary of the landmark Métis rights victory at the Supreme Court of Canada in R. v. Powley. Thanks to the personal sacrifices of the Powley family, the decision ushered in a whole new era of Métis rights recognition.
Over a decade-long legal battle, four levels of court heard the story of Steve Powley and his son Roddy, and the moose they proudly harvested from their traditional lands around Sault Ste. Marie to feed their family over the winter. Their incredible story is now a documentary film. We are so proud that the film will be shown to millions of students thanks to an educational partnership. But you can watch it right now, for free, and share it with everyone you know!
On Monday evening, MNO hosted a special screening for Members of Parliament and Senators as they returned to Ottawa so they could watch the film and learn the Powley story.
It is more important than ever that we share our history, culture, and stories with elected representatives. Our Métis self-government legislation was introduced in June but has not yet passed. Making Bill C-53 into law remains a top priority for the MNO! After 200 years of perseverance, we are hoping this parliamentary session will finally be one of reconciliation-in-action.
