2024-04-22We are thrilled to announce a series of upcoming workshops designed to engage and empower our community. All workshops are beginner friendly.
Registration is limited and for MNO Citizens. Please note that each individual must complete the online registration form separately. Kindly ensure that each person intending to register fills out their own form.
Workshop 1: Beaded Red Dress Pin Ages 16+.
Date: Tuesday, April 30th, 2024
Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: MNO Timmins Boardroom, 347 Spruce Street South, Timmins
Description: Honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG). Red Dress Day was inspired in 2010 by Jamie Black, a Métis artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Red Dress Day, first observed in 2010, happens every May 5. The goal of the day is to honour and bring awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women and girls, and two-spirit people who have gone missing or who have been murdered.
This workshop is suitable for all beading skill levels. Working with leather and learning edge beading techniques, participants will create a red dress pin to be worn or gifted.

Workshop 2: Mother’s Day Hand Embroidery Ages 16+.
Date: Saturday, May 11, 2024
Time: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: MNO Timmins Boardroom, 347 Spruce Street South, Timmins
Description: Participants will learn the basics of hand embroidery creating a floral design. In this beginner-friendly workshop where you’ll learn basic stitches and colour theory to create beautiful projects.
This workshop will be led by Krista Dekker, Artist & Owner at Homebody Handmade. Because these techniques take time, we ask that you plan on attending for the duration (1-4pm). All materials and snacks will be provided.
Similar to beadwork, embroidery adorned garments, as well as personal and household articles across the territories where the Métis lived and travelled. The practice of embroidery endures today, although silk materials have been substituted by cotton and rayon floss, or thicker wool and synthetic yarns. Workshop 3: Caribou Tufting Ages 16+.
Date: May 30th, 2024
Time: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: MNO Timmins Boardroom, 347 Spruce Street South, Timmins
Description: Participants will learn the basics of caribou hair tufting while creating their own floral design pin or keychain. This technique includes securing hairs with a loop stitch and then carving the hair with scissors to sculpt it. Come and learn about the tradition of this craft. Because these techniques take time, we ask that you plan on attending for the duration (6-9pm). All materials and snacks will be provided.
Caribou/Moose hair tufting is a cultural tradition that reflects the close relationship between communities and the land.
